Though other Greek islands may trump Cephalonia in terms of cosmopolitan edge, what this isle does particularly well is a sense of authenticity. It is the largest of the Ionian islands and rarely feels crowded, even in summer. It has also managed to avoid being spoiled by too much development. This means that its beautiful beaches, fishing villages and other attractions are seldom too busy: you’ll always find space to stretch out on the sand or get a table for lunch in the shade.

To get to Ithaca, you can take a ferry from the town of Sami, which is located on the east coast of Kefalonia. Apart from the capital of the island, Argostoli, don’t skip visiting the tiny villages of Fiscardo and Assos, during your holidays in Kefalonia. Gaze at the magical scenery, stroll around their little harbors, take in the sights and, of course, sit at a tavern to taste the yummy local delicacies. You’ll forget -even just for a while- the sounds of the city! Language: The local language in Kefalonia is Greek, of course, but almost everyone speaks and understands enough English for conversation. Lots of UK tourists visit the Ionian islands, so the locals are accustomed to speaking English with travelers. The sun shines through the partially-collapsed roof and into the water, giving off an almost mystical feeling!
